I use the shoulder exoskeleton when facing a longer microsurgical operation with the patient while I am in the sitting position. Cirka en fjerdedel (23,2%) af sygedagene i Tyskland skyldes muskel- og knoglesygdomme (data fra 2013). Og dette tal stiger, jo ældre man bliver: Hos de 55-årige og derover udgør det allerede mere end 35%. Der er påvist en direkte forbindelse mellem arbejde over hovedhøjde og muskel- og knoglesygdomme. Nej, alle bevægelser skal stadig udføres af dig selv. F.eks. reducerer exoskelettet Paexo Shoulder presset ved at omfordele belastningen. Det mindste exoskelet i verden, Paexo Thumb, fungerer ved hjælp af en lignende mekanisme. Her omdirigeres belastningen fra tommelfingeren til håndleddet.

Et kunstigt exoskelet er en understøttende konstruktion, der bæres på kroppen, og som aflaster bevægeapparatet under specifikke aktiviteter. Der sondres mellem passive og aktive exoskeletter. Et passivt exoskelet har ikke brug for en energiforsyning. Dets funktion er rent mekanisk. Et aktivt exoskelet er udstyret med sensorer og motorer, hvilket betyder, at det giver mere støtte, men det er afhængigt af en ekstern energiforsyning.
